Royal Guests
Klosters has also long been a favourite holiday destination for European royalty. His Majesty King Charles III and his family have skied here for many years, and both Prince William and Prince Harry learned to ski on the slopes above the village. As you walk through town, you’ll notice that many local businesses proudly display a royal warrant of appointment as official suppliers to the British Royal Family.
Famous Guests
Thanks to the publicity brought by Hollywood director Peter Viertel in the 1950s, Klosters became a magnet for Hollywood stars and creatives. Famous guests have included Deborah Kerr, Greta Garbo, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Gene Kelly (who once danced on the bar tables at Hotel Chesa Grischuna), Paul McCartney, Truman Capote and Audrey Hepburn. Because of this glamorous crowd, Klosters earned the nickname “Hollywood on the Rocks.”
Klosters History
Klosters, in Canton Graubünden, was first settled as a monastery around 1200 AD to develop the land for farming. Over time, this quiet alpine town grew from simple farms into a discreet hotspot for royals and many well-known names from film, music and theatre. It became a popular tourist destination about 100 years ago and is still a favourite for both summer and winter holidays. Through all these changes, Klosters has kept its traditional alpine style and character while remaining a calm, low-key escape for guests from around the world.
